how you can support robin long

As I hope you know, war resister Robin Long is in a US military jail, facing punishment for refusing to participate in the Iraq War.

Robin is currently being held at Fort Carson, Colorado. Lee Zaslofsky, one of the mainstays of our national campaign and a Vietnam War deserter, is on his way there to visit Robin, so I'll soon have an update on his condition.

You can send letters of support to Robin at:
Robin Long, CJC
2739 East Las Vegas
Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906
USA

We are told:

Robin is allowed to receive handwritten or typewritten letters. They must not include drawings made with markers, lipstick, crayons, or stickers or any printed articles. He cannot receive enclosures of any type except small photographs (up to 4x6 inches). Photographs can only be printed from a photo developer, not from a home printer or from photocopies, and no Polaroids. He can receive no more than nine photos at a time. Mail that violates these rules will be locked up with Robin's personal belongings, and he won't see them.

Control freaks, anyone?

Please don't forget Robin.

And don't forget there are hundreds of other war resisters and their families in Canada. Each one of them has risked their freedom and their futures to say no to an illegal and immoral war. We must help them stay safe and free in Canada. We must keep the pressure on.

Contact this stubborn, immoral, anti-democrat, minority Government. Urge them to immediately cease all deportation proceedings against other US war resisters, and to respect the will of Canadians and their elected representatives by implementing the motion adopted by Parliament on June 3. Please see the take action page for what you can do.

Contact information and ideas for actions are here.

The Harppocrits must be held accountable for anything that happens to any war resistor that is sent back. We must not forget the Nuremberg Trials. If any of these resistors should die in captivity - - for any reason - the Harpocrits should be held as accomplices to murder, as well as aiding and abetting the war crime which is the Iraq War.

I agree with you, Larry.

I am already thinking about when we get a new government and we win our fight to keep the war resisters in Canada, what we can do to bring people like Robin Long and James Burmeister back here.

Bad Conduct Discharges will mean their futures are ruined in the US - and they won't be able to immigrate to Canada, because according to the US, they are felons. (Ha! The true felons are in the White House and Congress.)

But perhaps a provision can be made to allow them to come back and start their lives over here, if they choose.

Meanwhile I will write to Robin with eyeliner and see what happens.

Of course it's Bush, Cheney, Rummy and Wolfowitz and their likes who ought to go to court and to get locked up in jail as criminals, not people like Robin. I would have been happy to see the leaders of the bunch impeached, of course. OMG, dubious deportations (like this one!!!) are definitely just awful!!!

The thing about lipstick and stuff reminds me of how the Bush club freaked out controlwise about lots of harmless things after 9/11 while letting rich Saudis with whom they can do business on oil get of the country right after the attacks and without interrogations and investigations or anything, as shown in Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore. We talked about that point at work today as well, by the way. It's awful what the Bush Administration has been doing!!!

OMG, not able to reimmigrate to Canada??!! Hopefully when the Harper Government gets voted out of office, a provision against that could be passed?

Regarding the job situation, better chances would probably be with employers who hate Bush and the Republican bunch and the Iraq war as well, I guess (and hope)??? Over here in Germany, a certificate that somebody has never been convicted in court for any offense is not necessary for a lot o jobs either, by the way, so I guess that might be a point as well...

With certain giant corporations, such as Wal-Mart (biggest employer in the US), McDonald's, etc., a clearance of criminal record is mandatory. Also, if James, Robin, and others want to pursue any higher education - so that they don't have to work for those kinds of employers all their lives - they'll need student loans, and they won't be able to get them with a Bad Conduct Discharge.

I hope we'll be able to bring them back to Canada for a second chance.

I hope the same, Laura, that would definitely be best!
