happy birthday, mayor mccallion

Happy 88th birthday to the mayor of my sprawling city, the Honourable Hazel McCallion.

Contrary to what's been reported in the past, McCallion says she is planning on running for mayor for yet another term. I'm glad! Every year on Canada Day, McCallion presides over a ceremony for a group of new Canadians. When our citizenship comes through, I want our ceremony to be here in Mississauga, and I want Hazel to be there!

Happy Birthday, Ms. McCallion. You rock.

She's remarkable, and it seems, still going strong!

Her staff says she's up at 6 each morning and home at midnight each night.

I can't do that and I'm 40 years younger.

Whoa! I didn't realize she was THAT old! I thought she was in her early 80s. I always thought of her as like my grandmothers' age, but she's nearly a decade older than them.

Her staff says she's up at 6 each morning and home at midnight each night.

Maybe this is because she's older? My grandmothers tell me that they sleep way less as they get older.

From the wiki link:

"At the age of 88, she was easily re-elected in November 2006 for her 11th consecutive term, holding a 91% majority of the votes, and has often been reelected without even needing to conduct an actual campaign."

Hilarious!

I don't mean the sleep so much as the energy level. My grandmother could get by on very sleep when she was that age, but she couldn't have been attending meetings, functions, making decisions, etc. all day long.

has often been reelected without even needing to conduct an actual campaign.

She is said to spend zero dollars campaigning.

Now I get it, Laura because I also thought at first OMG, a lot of old people can't sleep well and tend to get up terribly early. I see the point was about her energy.
And it's great that she is not conservative or anything in spite of her age!!!

Cornelia, you might enjoy looking at McCallion's Wikipedia page. She was a pioneer of women's hockey in her younger days.
