NOTICE TO APPEAR TO WRITE CITIZENSHIP TEST
Please appear on: 27 May 2010 4:00pm
MISSISSAUGA CITIZENSHIP OFFICE
75 Watline Avenue . . . [I know it well!]
You will have to write a test about your knowledge of Canada and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. You may write the test in English or French. To prepare for the test, you should study the book "A Look At Canada"...
This says our test is based on the old citizenship guide, but they may be using a form letter that was never updated. An earlier letter I received said our test will be based on the new guide.
Hm, what to do... Study both? "Before I write the test, could you please tell me if the test is based on the neoconservative wishful-thinking version of Canada, or the progressive wishful-thinking version?"
Whoo-hoo! We'll be citizens in time for this year's wmtc party!
PS: Dear Trolls: in your face!

Whoo hoo!
How long after writing the test will you get your ceremony notice?
No idea. I will try to find out.
Hey, maybe I'll be a citizen in time to vote in the next election! When's that, 2013 or so?
Congrats! We're putting it in our calendar. ;)
Congrats! At the rate we've been having pointless elections that fail to turf the Tories lately, I'd expect one early next year...
Congratulations!
The elections are pointless because of the results, but they can't come often enough AFAIC.
Thanks, all!
We're putting it in our calendar. ;)
Aww, how sweet! It will be a big week for me - I'll be in Ottawa for C-440 on May 25.
yay!
This is a toughie, Laura.
Should you prove that you know how to call foreigners "barbarians" (the Jason Kenney answer), or should you sound like a kind of nice guy who thinks the UN is a kind of nice institution? Should you mention women or not? Gays? Marriage?
Fingers crossed for you, and waiting for the full report back.
I think you should bring a copy of your blog post on the two versions of the guide and ask for an exemption! You will probably know either version better than anyone who will actually be administering the test!
If you actually do need to study, I don't think it would be out of line to call the office and ask them for clarification which guide.
That's so great L!!!!!
CONGADULASHONS!!!!! :)
Im going to take a guess and say the old one. because of the fact that the new one is printing now but look at the web page i think i have seen a note on that but i would phone to see!!!
as for an it may happen with in 2 months because of the detainee docs fiasco so you may get to vote A Lot sooner!!
CONGADULASHONS!!!!! :)!!!!!.
You're already spelling like a Canadian with all colours flying. What harm can come to you!
Thank you, everyone. :)

That's a great idea. I'm reasonably certain it's the new guide, as everywhere I look shows the same thing as the earlier letter: tests before March 15, 2010 are old guide, tests after March 15 are new guide.
In all likelihood (jokes aside), the answers to the questions don't change. What provinces make up Atlantic Canada? Who is the head of state? What is the last step in a bill becoming law? and so on. (Multiple choice)
But greater clarity can never hurt, so I think I will call.
Congrats to you both!
No need to sweat the "exam" as I'm sure you'll both ace it . . . .
Well congratulations, gotta love government bureaucracy eh? Hurry up and wait.
Congratulations. Just remember to express support for the military and for the Queen, and not to mention same-sex marriage or the environment...
Hey, thanks everyone.
Mike, I put your comment through but it looks like Blogger ate it.
Mike was asking about this:
PS: Dear Trolls: in your face!
Yes, some wmtc trolls don't think we should become Canadian citizens. "Ha ha" /nelson (Simpsons)
"you may pass test but youll never be real canadians" (/douchebag_2000)
"Sometimes it seemed like the only way I'd be able to get these people to accept me would be to somehow arrange to have been born here fifty years ago" -- Walt Wingfield, "Letters From Wingfield Farm"
"Sometimes it seemed like the only way I'd be able to get these people to accept me would be to somehow arrange to have been born here fifty years ago"
Exactly. I've heard New England described this way many many times. Fortunately, I don't find Canada like that at all. Quite the opposite.

Which is great, but Wingfield was referring to the natives of Dufferin County, Ontario (where my mother grew up - fictionalized as "Penelope County"), dealing with him as a Torontonian. :)
Oh yes, I remembered the context. Canada was a lot less multicultural then, no? Also, a rural area is always different than urban/suburban.
They were multicultural -- they had at least a couple of Catholics in the county! :)
But things have indeed changed a lot. I remember my grandmother taking years to figure out that the reason why the (woman) rector of her United Church had a "roommate" living with her in the rectory was because they were a lesbian couple. By the time she realized it, she'd already decided that same-sex relationships were no big deal.
Of course, Creemore is a Big Town now, what with Creemore Springs Beer. And I remember that it was quite a big deal when Alliston got a Swiss Chalet. In fact, that's where the family went to eat after my Grandmother's funeral. Fanciest place in town.
Hopeful pre-congrats to you.
Woo Hoo, congrats!!! Sorry I've been away so long (you know life blowing up and all LOL)
Hopefully, I'm not too far behind you :-)
Thanks, Nick! Yup, you're next!
